What is the best flooring to prevent mold?

Is tile dangerous to have in the kitchen? Bathrooms? How about tile in the shower?

What flooring would be best in the bathrooms and kitchen? What type of showers are best?

Thanks!

Tile would be the best. It is non-solubale and easy to clean.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Susan

Thanks for the reply! I was reading on other websites that the cement grout used for tile floors is very porous and is a common cause of mold in bathrooms, and that "epoxy" grout is better to use since it is not porous. Any thoughts on this?

They now have coatings that protect against mold. You might want to look into that.

Cheers,
Susan

Grout doesn't cause mold, its the micro-organic dirt that gets on it that allows the mold or fungus to grow.

Cleaning it regularly with a strong enough biocide to kill organics would make it alright. But mold can grow on ANY material if it is dirty. You can find mold on windows, but mold cant grow on glass.....it grows on the dirt film ON the glass.

That said, there are sealers to make the grout less permeable. There are also epoxy floors, and cementious coatings. Hardwood floors do pretty well, depending on the type of wood and if they are prefinished or not. The harder the wood the better, laminates are bad, carpet is bad, good quality vinyl can be OK, but you can't have water get under it.
