|
|
My parents are getting house insulation soon. The people doing the job said before installing the cavity wall they'll do a test to see if it's damp at all. They said if they find any dampness they'll do something to treat it...and then after that it will be ok to install the cavity wall.
I want to know if what I said above sounds correct, how do they treat it? And can their test show up dampness on the ceilings and in the loft as well, or just in the walls? I've posted on here before, my parents have mold in the house, it's mainly on the ceilings and around the metal windows. |

I would suggest you consult with a remediation expert for an answer to your question. Mold Help Approved specialists are at www.mold-help.com.
Additionally, mold can also eat through insulation. I would be very careful if I were you.
Good luck.
Cheers,

Let me also clarify, that treating includes finding the cause of the water, and fixing that so it does not get wet again...

Well I think the cause of the mold could be from the aluminium windows, the windows and sills get soaked in water during the winter, they sweat badly. The mold I get is usually on the ceiling above the windows and of course around and on the windows itself, do you think this could be the possible cause? I kept noticing more and more new spots of mold on the ceiling so I ended up sleeping at night with the windows open and freezing, this seemed to stop the mold...
We are getting 'plastic' windows very soon so would that solve the problem?
Oh and btw we got the insulation done, they never reported any problems putting it in so I presume they didn't find any damp. Definitely mold inside the house though as stated above.
Thanks! |

I have been in TONS of houses, and I have never scene condensation alone cause a mold problem...how ever if the A/C has leaked, and is blowing spores ALL over the place "normal" condensation will cause mold to grow...
I know it is a bit confusing, but ALL houses have some moisture, and don't grow mold...like in the toilet or on dishes over night, but if there is an infestation it will grow on those 'normal" conditions...get it??

But I thought it was a known fact that 'Aluminum Windows' can cause mold growth in the winter when they sweat?? Our mold problems are near the windows and on them, and it only grows in the winter so surely it's the windows...
I was looking here: http://www.windowexpert.net/Aluminum-Windows.asp Under disadvantages of Aluminum Windows, it says "Aluminum windows tend to produce "sweat" in the winter, leading to mold growth. The hidden mold growth can be hazardous to those allergic to mold. Further, if the mold produced spreads to the wood structure of the house, it can rot. The "sweat" problem, while serious, can be effectively eliminated with thermal breaks".
What is A/C? Air Conditioning? We don't have air conditioning. |

Mold is ubiquitious. You can't stop the harmless mold that grows around shower doors and aluminum windows. Just keep the windows as clean as possible. Household mold and the type of mold highlighted on this Mold Help are two different entities.

But like I said the mold has got onto the ceilings above the windows, I think the windows are the cause but I'm not 100% certain. That window expert used the words "serious" and "hazardous" but you think it's harmless?
I hear what you are saying about the "two different entities" but how am I supposed to tell the difference when they both look the same...here are some pics of my mold I posted ages ago: http://toxic.mold-help.org/viewtopic.php?t=3058
We are having vinyl windows put in at the weekend so I'm hoping this will solve things... |

When an A/C system leaks water it can start a mold colony, the spores will spread all over the house.
The normal condensation is enough moisture to start those spores growing...
So, normally when mold is growing in toilets or on dishes you leave out over night, or on condensation it is actually spreading from another source...
